What is Bouldering?

Recent years rock climbing has made the leap from extreme to mainstream and is becoming increasingly featured in the national media. It is recognised as one of the fastest growing participation sports in the country.
Bouldering is the purest and most accessible form of climbing, requiring no training or prior experience. Indoor bouldering involves climbing without ropes up to heights of around 5 metres with a heavily padded landing as the primary safety feature. Since no ropes or technical equipment is needed, participants can explore the facility at their leisure, adhering to some basic safety guidelines.
Bouldering concentrates on the difficulty of the climbing moves. The routes are much shorter that roped climbs so they tend to emphasize strength, power, agility and dynamism, whereas roped climbs emphasize endurance. Boulder routes are known as problems, which reflects the mental challenge as well as the physical one.
